Johnny Bower. Wendel Clark. Darryl Sittler. Mats Sundin. Dave Keon. Doug Gilmour. Dozens of Publicis employees.
What do all these people have in common? The thrill of skating on the ice at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens). The local team may have moved on, but the iconic walls still stand at 50 Carlton Street where the legends once played.
Recently, Pub United took center ice for a flowing free skate followed by a rousing game of shinny. People of all skill levels laced up their skates. A few brought their kids. Together we took several leisurely turns around the ice, then brought out the pucks, sticks and helmets to do our best Auston Matthews impressions.
Some were there for the competition, others for the socializing. One thing’s for sure: the Maple Leaf stars of yesteryear never played to our soundtrack of Drake, The Tragically Hip, Stompin’ Tom, Naughty by Nature and Daft Punk (among many, many others). After a couple of enjoyable, exhausting hours, we moved across the street for post-game conversation and good times. One hot topic: What’s the next athletic pursuit for the office? If you’re a fan of ‘the beautiful game’, you’ll know the answer…
